RIMS Ontario Chapter Presents Glen Frederick with the Prestigious Donald M. Stuart Award

September 19, 2011

Ottawa (September 19, 2011) — At the 2011 RIMS Canada Conference, the Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc. (RIMS) Ontario Chapter presented the Donald M. Stuart Award to Glen Frederick, Director, Risk Management Client Services – Core Government and Crowns in the Risk Management Branch of the Government of British Columbia.  Widely recognized as Canada’s highest honor within the risk management field, the Donald M. Stuart Award has been bestowed annually since 1979 to celebrate Canadians who have made outstanding contributions in the risk management profession.

“Each year we present this award to an extraordinary risk manager who has achieved greatness throughout their career and who demonstrates an unwavering commitment to advancing the discipline,” said Roman Parzei, Ontario Chapter president.  “For more than 25 years, Glen Frederick has been an active and valued member of the RIMS family in Canada.  His professional accomplishments are unrivaled and we are thrilled to announce him as this year’s winner of the 2011 Donald M. Stuart Award.”

Glen has been an integral part of a senior management team that has established a sophisticated risk management program within the British Columbia Government.  Using a myriad of risk management tools and techniques, his team has developed and implemented several insured and self-insured programs that are estimated to have saved the government more than $1 billion over the last seven years.

Additionally, under Glen’s leadership, a successful enterprise risk management (ERM) strategy for the Vancouver organizing committee (VANOC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was implemented to manage risks associated with the 2010 Olympic Games.  The Vancouver Games were the first games to utilize an ERM strategy.  As a result of its success, the IOC now requires all future Olympic Games to implement an ERM strategy utilizing a similar methodology.

“Mr. Stuart was a pioneer, a risk management legend and to be nominated for this award has truly been a humbling experience,” said Frederick. “Our profession has made great strides since the early days of my career.  It has been a privilege to be a part of that progress and, as an educator, I’ve had the great opportunity to give back to future risk professionals.”

Glen served on the boards of the Manitoba, Canadian Capital Region (Ottawa) and British Columbia Chapters of RIMS.  He was Chair of the RIMS Canada Council from 2006-2007 and served on the RIMS Nominating Committee.  He was also co-chair of the 2003 RIMS Canada Conference in Victoria, B.C. He is now in his 20th year as an instructor for CRM courses and currently instructs all three courses in Victoria for Simon Fraser University.  Prior to that, he shared instructional duties with Fred Bossons at Algonquin College in Ottawa.

Fred H. Bossons Award

Also presented during the conference was the Fred H. Bossons Award, which each year honors the risk management professional who earns the highest marks on the three courses required to receive the Canadian Risk Management designation. This year the winner is Drew Collins, CRM, JEVCO Insurance.
