Roger L. Andrews

For more than 40 years, Roger L. Andrews’ steadfast commitment to the advancement of risk management has kept communities safe, company assets protected while creating countless opportunities for others to enjoy rewarding careers in the field. 

Most recently, Roger served for twenty-five years as the Director of Risk Management for E.D. Bullard Company, a fifth-generation company founded in 1898 which invented the hard hat and continues to be a leading global manufacturer of high-quality personal protective equipment.  He also served as General Counsel there from 1993 to 1997.  At Bullard, he was responsible for designing the organization’s insurance program where he worked with brokers and carriers on all property and casualty insurance.  He managed product liability cases involving more than 34,000 silicosis plaintiffs and more than 2,200 asbestos plaintiffs – both with exceptionally high dismissal success.  He is also credited with reducing the organization’s total cost of risk from more than 7 percent to 0.4 percent of sales.  He retired from Bullard in 2016.  His career included positions with Travelers Insurance Company, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the State of Maine, Hannaford Bros. Co. and Bath Iron Works Corporation.

However, Roger’s altruism and mentorship define his risk management legacy.  Roger joined RIMS in Maine in 1982 and, years later helped revive the dormant Bluegrass Chapter of RIMS in Lexington, Kentucky in 1992.  In 1996, Roger was asked to update the RIMS constitution and bylaws.   In 1998, he was awarded the Society’s Richard W. Bland Award for outstanding achievements in the areas of government affairs and advocacy.  He began service on the RIMS global board of directors (then called the Executive Council) in 1998 and immediately proposed a significant organizational change--the reduction of the size of the RIMS board of directors from 82 members, where each chapter was represented, to 15 members, and the creation of the RIMS House of Delegates where each chapter participated.  Roger was selected as the Society’s president from 2000 to 2001.

Roger continues to demonstrate his commitment to the future of risk management through his volunteerism with the Spencer Educational Foundation, a not-for-profit dedicated to creating opportunities for risk management and insurance students.  He was a member of the Spencer Board of Directors from 2002 to 2017 including terms as President and Chair.  He continues to serve on the Spencer Audit Committee.  He was also very involved in Spencer’s Risk Manager in Residence program, a program which afforded him the opportunity to travel to universities across the country to lecture and engage with risk management and insurance students.

To this day, Roger continues to have a significant impact on risk management with his role in the development of a risk management and insurance program at Utah Valley University.  For more than 20 years, he has been a leader with the RIMS Utah Chapter where he arranges programming and helps organize the RIMS Western Regional Conferences.  Roger was awarded the Harry & Dorothy Goodell Award in 2006, RIMS highest honor presented for lifetime achievement in risk management.
